Race # 3: The Main Event at Drachten, The Netherlands, 28-30 july 2017.

The weather forecast did not look well, but the weather at Drachten airfield is difficult to predict, and we got lucky. But there was a strong head wind all weekend, so conditions were far from ideal.

There were enough riders on the entree list to do a 16-field race, but all three Belgian racers had wrecked their engines, one week earlier at a race in France. Two of them, Marc van den Boer and Chris van Nimmen still showed up, to watch the others race, and wrench on Chris' bike between the runs.

On friday morning, Bend Foit started up his engine in the pits to check and warm it up, and you can see the result below.

The qualifications for the "Pro classes" were held a fixed times, at 13:00, 16:00 and at 19:00 on both friday and saturday.

First in line in the first round was Sven-Ole Schleichert on his V-rod Destroyer.

Sven-Ole did 10.37

Nine years after racing in the V-rod Destroyer Cup class, Sascha Brodbeck from Switserland is back in the saddle.

And it looked as if he had never stopped racing while he did 9.709

Martin Buehler made a big burnout on the ex-Otto Bauer supercharged Godden dragbike.

Somewhere in the above cloud of smoke is Jörg Braune prepairing for his run. 10.40 was the result of Martin's first run.

Jörg Braune was assisted by his pregnent wife for the last time this season. She'll be in the grandstand watching the action at Hockenheim.

Jörg's first run was in 10.0 seconds.

Janek Severa from the Czech Republic had the best seat in the house, camping closest to the startline.

Janek's first run in the Netherlands was in 10.45 seconds.

Jan Malmberg arrived the airfield in Mats Larsson's big old bus. Jan and Team Sweden had supporters on friday afternoon, as Anna-Lena Asplund and her husband and children were watching him.

Jan did 8.45 in his first pass, that put him on top of the list. This end speed of 194 kmh indicated that he went off throttle early. All riders did, because of the strong head wind.

And Frederik Schack's chain broke during his first launch.

And it also hurt the gearbox.

After more then a year of recovering from an accident, and lending his bike to Yvana and Tonnie van den Berg, Patrick Kras made his comeback in the second round of qualifications.

Brodbeck, Buehler, Severa and Schleichert tried for a second time, but could not improve.

Then Patrick Kras entered the list with 9.58 seconds that put him in place #2 so far. No improvement for Malmberg and Braune in the left lane.

Cord Albers and his crew man Gerd Caspari had skipped the first round. The fuel pump did not work while starting up for round two. Team Schack had stayed in the pits to work on their bike during round two. And Jörg Lymant had arrived in the afternoon. All three are capable of doing seven second runs, so expectations were high when they all came out for the third round of qualifications on friday evening.

Martin Buehler was first in line and improved to 10.20 seconds in the right lane.

No better time for Brodbeck in the left lane. Next pair: Albers and Severa.

A great pass for Cord, 7.75 seconds and 271.7 kmh. Janek Severa improved to 10.2

Frederick Schack demonstrated his great reaction with 0.04 and had a great launch.

But the fun was over soon, as he was only able to use just a few gears, and it took him 13.3 seconds to get to the end.

In the other lane, Jörg Braune did 9.65 and passed Brodbeck in the list. Then Sven-Ole Schleichert did a new personal best of 9.993 in the left lane, while Patrick Kras could not improve.

Jan Malmberg left the startline a bit earlier then Jörg Lymant, and both riders drifted towards the centerline.

Malmberg did not improve and shut off early. Lymant did a great run, but went off throttle about 30 meter before the finish line for safety, seeing Malmberg slowing down in front of him. 7.702 and 214 Kmh was Jörg's result.

Then Rene van den Berg blasted down the track doing a 6.8 on his Topfuel bike.

One last test before his next big race. Looks like he's ready.

On saturday Patrick Kras went 8.56 and 237.5 Kmh, approaching his old level of doing "low eights".

Martin Buehler did better then the day before: 9.997 and then a 9.789, but broke his gearbox and was done. Schack tried again after a repair attempt but the gearbox failed again.

Malmberg improved to 8.276 with an early shut-off. And Sacha Brodbeck went down to 9.700 at the end of the second day.

Jörg Lymant remained topqualifier but did not improve on day two.

Former supertwin topgas and prostock bike champion Gert-Jan Laseur made a few passes to practice on his new Nitro-bike.

Rain came down during the night, but it cleared up in time and one more round of qualifications was held on sunday morning.

Jan Malmberg's son had arrived the night before, and he was very happy seeing his dad do 8.14 and 264 Kmh.

Sascha Brodbeck broke his gearbox on sunday morning, but was happy with the result so far. He quickly picked up his routine and found a base line for the next race.

With the leader in the championship, Frederick Schack, not qualified, Jörg Lymant needed to win just one round to pass Schack and take the lead.

But Lymant's engine stopped running after the burnout, and a re-start is not allowed during the eliminations! His opponent Janek Severa got lucky and went to the semi finals with 11.817.

Second pair in the quarter finals saw another supprise. Partrick Kras and Jörg Braune hadqualified # 4 and 5, so it could have been a good race. But both engines stalled after the riders dumped the clutch.

Braune could have won the round if he would have run to the finish line with his bike, but he did not know or realise it. Both went back and were out of the race. Too much clutch for Kras, and an electrical problem for Braune.

Sven-Ole Schleichert had the better reaction against Cord Albers.

Albers won with 9.50 and took out Schleichert who did 10.53

Jan Malmberg had a bye-run in the quarter finals because of Brodbeck's "no show". And he won lane choise over Albers in the next rounds.

Malmberg is third in the championship after two races, and is closing the gap, now the # 1 and 2 are out.

Although he only needed to ride his front wheel over startline to advance to the finals, Janek Severa planned to do a full quarter mile pass. But his clutch jammed at the launch and the engine stalled.

Malmberg could take the lead in the championship if would advance to the finals,

Malmberg had a slight advance at the startline, but Cord Albers passed him quickly and went to the finals with 7.807. Malmberg's time was 8.511.

Jörg Braune was allowed to do a test run after the semis. He had good launch but then problems again. Braune: "The short circuit that stopped the bike in the quarter finals erased the mapping from the ECU. That’s why I lost power at my last test run. We go on the dyno soon and I ordered some spare parts. Hockenheim is confirmed".

Rain came down after the semi finals, but only briefly and the track crew and the wind dried the track quickly.

The final round: Janek Severa had the better reaction.

Cord Albers had to work hard to keep going straight. Half way it looked as if Severa was going to get him.

Albers won the race with 9.495, Severa did 10.40.

(Severa, Albers, Malmberg)

Frederik Schack still leads the championship with 965 points. He is chased by Jörg Lymant who has 945 points, and Jan Malmberg who has 900. Three more races to go: Hockenheim, Mosten, then again Drachten.

Thanks to the crew of DHRA and ESLA. See you at the end of september!

Next race is the NitrolympX at Hockenheim, and the entree list has about twenty topgassers on it!

See you all there!
