The Finals of 2013
For the last race in our serie we went back to the place where we kicked off this year. Knebl Drag Promotion's Drag day 33 at the small airfield in Hoskovice, Cz. It was our spare race at the calender, but when Drachten 3 was cancelled, it became our final championship race. Some rain was predicted, but it was sunny on saturday, as you can see on the picture below.
Team Schack only needed to qualify to be certain of the title, and Chris van Nimmen had to fight off Frank Heitmann for the third place. Seven riders on the entree list, and six actually showed up.
Our old friend Peter Marz was ready to ride his bike after a long absence as active racer. He also came to celebrate his 52nd birthday with us, and at the riders meeting on saturday he was presented a big welcome cake by our host Yvona Kneblova.
Peter arrived without a crew, as Axel Seifert was on a trip to the USA. Our class representative Piet Verhoef stepped in to assist Peter at the start line and in the pits. Here's a picture of his first burnout:
It had been a hard season for Herman Jolink so far this year, and Drag Day 33 was no exception. On his way to the track, he had been stopped at the German autobahn and the police noticed his camper van had "a little bit" of overweigt. So he had to pay up and leave his spare engine and parts in storage at a nearby motor shop. But he got help from his old team member Henry Evers, so at least he brought a crew man this time. He had a fresh rear slick monted to the special Ducati dragbike so Herman used the free training session on friday evening to break it in with a long burnout, and a check out pass on the quarter mile dragstrip.
Herman won the first race at the Czech Drag Day, so one of the favorites to win again.
But it was Frank Heitmann who set the quickest time in the first round on saturday, 8.4 seconds was the time for the others to try and beat from then on.
Frank was assisted by Cord Albers, who might be back on a topgas bike next year.
And Frank's son Nico was competing in the teenage dragbike class.
Peter Niklas' bike stopped just after the start, and he went back into the line up.
Then Frederik launched well, but it looked as if he had the same problems as in the first race, it would not shift, he had to push the button twentyseven times to get through the gears.
A disapointing time was the result.
The first run of Peter Marz was on one cylinder.
A compression test showed a problem with the rear exhaust valve.
Chris van Nimmen left the startline and set very low 60 foot time, but then went going sideways and into the other lane. No danger, as all riders got bye-runs during qualifications.
Herman Jolink make a rather concervative first pass,
...like he usually does. Some progession to be expected from him later on in the race.
Peter Niklas got a second try, and he used it well
An eight second pass, and the Honda sounded strong. Team Sideburns had been struggling with the set-up of the injected turbocharched Honda SP1 all season. It looks af if they have a base line now.
Peter Niklas managed to qualify at place #4, but damage to the front cylinder, beyond quick repair, was the result of two attempts. He was still able to pass Harry van Schie in the point list, but now Peter stays at place #6 this year.
Frank Heitmann did a better 60 foot in round two, but no better result. The problem went from bad to worse with Schack, but Herman Jolink stepped up a bit.
The other three teams were wrenching and skipped the second round.
Frank Heitmann was first in line again, but could not better his own time in round three,
... but was the quickest of every round so far.
A great sixty foot of 1.17 for Schack,
But the problem still not solved. Big problems for Chris van Nimmen too, as he went sideways again after a great launch.
So still not qualified, Chris checked the wheelybar once more, but maybe the old frame just can't handle the extra power that the twincam engine makes. He also damaged his gearbox, by the way...
And again Herman Jolink stepped up a bit.
At this point in the race Frederik Schack was notvery happy with his crewchief who also happens to be his father.
The team had brought two bikes, so dad could also have some fun.
Rene manage to stay ahead of the rest in the pro-street class, and on top of the list all day.
Then Heitmann, Schack and Jolink tried one last time before the sun went down. Heitmann still consistent. Schack produced an 8.6, his best result so far, but no change in position.
Herman Jolink improved his 60 foot, but could not set a better time. Jolink: "The track is getting cold"
Sideburns Christian Bruhn just needed to qualify in the Modified Street Twin to become the Czech champion in that class and he raced at all three drag days in Cz.
This was his only wheely of the day. Christian took the lead in the qualifications, more the half a second quicker then his six opponents. Congratulations Christian, well done!
In the Super Streetbike class, Michael Kaupat dominated the field on his turbo Hayabusa.
Sandro Haldiman from Switserland was in the lead of the Cz championship, but local favorite Tomas Cizek could still pass him. Too bad Tomas damaged the cranck of his bike. He went home to get a street hayabusa, but that was just not quick enough to mess at the highest level, while Sandro qualified at place #2.
Some late night wrenching going on in the pits that night. Team Schack tried to resolve the shifting problems, Chris van Nimmen repaired his gearbox after borrowing a small part of Schack's spare tranny, and Peter Marz used the new workbench in his fully equipped race trailer for the first time to get the rear cylinder head repaired. Belgian Funny bike racer Luc Raeymakers had damaged all four pistons of his Nos-assisted Kawa.
Luc was the top qualifier in his class and still able to become the Cz champ in Competition Bike.
While having a beer at half past ten with Otto Knebl, who just got back from Santa Pod where he did a great new personal best on his Puma Top Fuel bike, we could hear the roar of Marzepeter's Harley firing up to check. When he shut it off, the sound of Luc's Kawa could be heard.
Another round of qualificatitions was planned for sunday morning, but the day started with a wet track. It dried up, and racing continued, but when it was the turn for the topgassers, it was dripping again, soon followed by rain, so back to the pits and hope for the best. But at 14:00 it was called officially over. A ceremony was held, based on the qualification results.
Here the teenagers, with Nico Heitmann, Andrea Binova and Vojtech Hromcik:
The Pro-Streetbikers, Pavel Beer Werdan, René Kirkhoff, and Michael Vopat:
The Superstreeters, with Cz champion Haldiman on the left, Michael Kaupat, and Pavel Beer Werdan:
Modified street twin, Vaclav Cebal, Christian Bruhn and Jiri Rylich:
Competition Bike, Pavel Bajer, Luc Raeymakers and the new Cz champion Jozef Cizek:
And Supertwin Top Gas:
Jolink, Heitmann and Schack, the same guys on the podium as at the first race in Cz, but now all on a different position.
No changes in the point list after this race, Herman Jolink set the best top speed, 253 Kmh, and becomes the unofficial Czech champ. Frederik Schack is the 2013 Supertwin Topgas champion. Many congratulations to him and his team.
(left to right: Peter Niklas, Herman Jolink, Frederik Schack, Chris van Nimmen, and Frank Heitmann)
The weather prevented Frank Heitmann from taking third place away from Chris van Nimmen. For details check the point list. And all results of the race here...
Many thanks to Yvona, Mr Hutla, and all crew at Hoskovice.
The annual winter meeting will probably be held at the end of february, at the usual place ear Minden, Germany. See you all there!
