Fifth race of the season, Turtmann raceway, Switserland.

After our tour in the east of Europe, and a race in Holland, we now went to Switserland, to Turtmann airfield in the Rhone valley. It's funny that in a country that's famous for their clocks and watches, they needed a Dutch crew to do the timing. And they worked their asses off, having to deal with the many power failures, and again tropical conditions. There were many more spectators then last year. They had stunt riders, jet cars, and not enough toilets. On friday afternoon there was a training session, so the riders could test the track, to find the right set-up for the quarter mile dragrace on Turtmann raceway.

In the supertwin topgas class we saw the leader in points Roman Sixta from Czech republic compete with Herman Jolink and Harry van Schie from the Netherlands, and Peter Marz, Bernd Niessen, and

Ralph Heuer, picture by Detlef

Ralph Heuer from Germany.

And on saturday morning a supprise: Italian Ricardo Giliberto put his Harley on the track and clocked an 8.4 in the left lane, and an 8.3 in the right lane, securing the #1 spot. Bernd Niessen came second with 8.6, and Roman could not get it under 8.8. Herman Jolink had already trained 9.06 but could not repeat it on saturday. In the last qualification session he passed van Schie, with 9.2. Peter Marz had problems with his gearbox, so he changed it to a "high gear" using only the fifth. On saturday night some teams went to the party zone,

while others missed all the fun, wrenching late to get the bike in shape for the dragrace on sunday. The eliminations started in the morning, but the topgassers had to be patient till half past two for their quarter finals. But then it went fast: Riccardo started off with an 8.220 in his bye run. Then it was dutchmen only, in the battle between Harry van Schie and Herman Jolink. Harry had the best reaction, and a better 60 foot, but half way down the track, both riders had the same time, 6.1, and Herman went to get Harry. With a top speed of 242 kmh, the Ducati was much faster at top end. 9.2 seconds for Herman, 9.45 and 218 kmh for Harry. Next pair: Ralph Heuer against Bernd Niessen. Crewchief Gerd had set up the DHL-buell well, a new personal best for Bernd: 8.661 and much quicker than Heuer, who did 10.7. Then came Sixta against Marz.

Peter Marz

Marz could only use his fifth gear, and needed 11.1 sec. to fininsh, so Sixta was way too fast with an 8.8. In the semi finals we had the Dutch Ducati against the Italian Harley-Davidson. Herman Jolink

Herman Jolink was slipping and sliding the first half of the track, while Riccardo did his best run of the weekend: 8.207 @ 265.6 kmh.

8.207 @ 265.68 kmh

Bad Luck for Niessen in his semi finals. A big hole in the bottom of the S&S engine appeared after his burnout. Major damage, so the season could well be over for him.

So Roman made it into the finals the easy way. But his bike had problems. after "czeching", it showed the blower pressure was 30% less than normal. With only one hour between the semis and the finals, there was not much he could do.

9.0 seconds was not good enough the beat Riccardo, who did another 8.2, and won the race. Roman Sixta made a lot of points and is very strongly in the lead of the european championship. Even if he scores no more point, Herman Jolink needs to make it into the finals in both remaining races to come anywhere near him. Harry van Schie is third, close behind Herman.

Thanks to Detlef of team Nightriders for the help with the pictures. Congratulations to Michael Merse of team Nightriders with his victory in the V-rod Destroyer cup. Hope to see you all in Vandel, Denmark in three weeks where we will meet some fast scandinavian riders, like Tom Tinndahn, who did a 7.3 in Finland. Chip Ellis did 6.911 in the USA last weekend, before his con rod broke in the finals.
