Race #5: August 9-11 NitrOlympX Hockenheim.
After last year's disaster, a new surface was put on the track, and a few weeks of preparation created excelent race conditions on the "Rico Anthes quarter mile" at the German "Home of Speed".
All the bike were technically inspected by our friend Peter Marz, who also brought his Supertwin Topgas bike over, to prepare it for a future race in his spare hours, and our former champion Axel Seifert and his wife Inez came to help.
Eleven riders competed in the Supertwin Topgas class and they were given three chances to qualify on friday, and one more on saturday afternoon.
Only eight would race on sunday, so a hard battle to even get into the field.
All the way from Finland came Mia-Maria Vepsalainen,
but she failed to qualify, she ran 10.4 seconds and became the first alternate for race day.
Milan Kolacny from Czech republic also did not make it into the race,
and he wrecked another Honda engine while trying to qualify:
The motor exploded during warm-up in the pits, and the bike got fire, but that was quickly put out by one of the crew members. They worked hard to get the spare engine in, and get it ready for the last chance. Milan left strong, but then lost power, and got place #11 with 13.2 seconds.
Team Sideburns from Germany entered with two bikes in the class. Peter Niklas' Honda still had problems,
Peter did a 10.5, not good enough qualify. His team mate Christian Bruhn made it into the field,
...and landed on place #8 with his Ducati 999 with a best time of 10.2 seconds @ 222 Kmh.
Their crew chief Michi raced his Opel in a sportsman class. He was too slow for the index to qualify, but he enjoyed every second of it.
German Superstreettwin racer Joerg Lymant added a wheelybar to his bike and joined for the occasion.
There are not many racers left in the SST class, so we might see more of him in the future. He did 9.69 sec. and qualified at place #7.
It was the first race of the season for Simon Lewis from Bavaria. So he was glad he got some help of Gerd Caspari, who set up his clutch.
Simon was on place # 7 on friday evening, but passed Lymant on saturday with a 9.66, so landed on spot 6.
A lot of Belgian friends had gathered in the tent of Chris van Nimmen, but Cris had no time to entertain them, but had to work hard on his bike again.
Friday evening he noticed a crack in the frame, and took the twin cam engine and gearbox out.
Then fellow racer Joerg Lymant did a very good job at welding it up, so Chris could keep on racing.
Chris van Nimmen qualified #5 and his opponent for sunday was Frank Heitmann, who was assisted by Cord Albers who also tuned his bike. Frank produced a serie of consistent mid-eight passes.
Herman Jolink from Holland started off with an 8.7, and improved two times during qualifications, he got to place #3 with an 8.43 @ 253 Kmh.
Just like last year, Charly Abrahams from France came to race in our class with the ex-Giliberto Sportster.
He managed to qualify at place #2. He needed 8.37 seconds in the first round on friday, and did not improve. Instead he badly damaged his gearbox in the second round, but was able to repair in time for the dragrace on sunday.
Thanks to my friend DaSchraadz you can watch the action on youtube.
Team Schack from Denmark is in the lead in the championship since the last race. Fredrik Schack qualified #1 with a 7.79 @ 264 kmh, and had no problem with Christian Bruhn (10.13 sec) in the quarter finals, as you can see on the picture below.
Frank Heitmann was the quickest of the quarter finalists with 8.50 seconds. And he even closed the throttle before he passed the finish line, while Chris van Nimmen was close behind after a better reaction, doing his quickest pass of the weekend.
Joerg Lymant suprised many people with his sharp reaction and by taking out Charly Abrahams.
9.58 sec. for Lymant vs 9.60 sec. for Abrahams (right lane, picture above).
Simon Lewis' bike started leaking oil after the burnout, so he had to shut it off. At the background of the picture below you can see the crew cleaning up the mess he left behind.
So Herman Jolink got a free ride on his Ducati into the semi's, but he did not take it easy, lane choice was his goal, as he went 8.650.
In the semi finals Fredrik Schack did his best run of the weekend, Frank Heitmann too, but he reacted later.
Frank did 8.48, and look at Fredrik's numbers:
Again another great reaction of Joerg Lymant, in an attemp to stay ahead of Herman Jolink in the semi finals.
But Jolink's 8.505 was more then a second quicker then Lymant's pass, so Herman went through to meet Schack in the finals.
Jolink reacted very sharp, 0.09 while Schack did 0.258
But Fredrik easily caught up with Herman who had to work hard to keep going straight:
After his victory in Avon Park and Vandel, Fredrik Schack also won the NitrolympX.
But he is not safe from Jolink in the battle for the championship yet, we have two more races to go. Frank Heitman (left) is stronger on place #3 now, ahead of Cris van Nimmen. (see point list for details).
And watch the films below:
What else happened?
Former topgasser Michael Merse did a new personal best of 7.801 in the Superstreetbike class, and his team mate Michael Kaupat did a new pb of 8.23. Here they are side by side, with Merse in the left lane:
Dave Holland (UK) won the SSB race by beating Gary Bowe (UK).
Former topgas champion Gert-jan Laseur (NL) competed in prostock bike, and did a nice 7.2 on his Buell.
He also helped Fredrick Schack to a bunch of spare clutch plates. Fredrik Fredlund won the race in that class and produced a few 7.0 runs, with former topgasser Brian Glaesner in his crew.
The Funnybike class was won by Eric Richard from France.
Former Topgas champion Roman Sixta (picture above) from the Czech republic did a new personal best of 7.4 in Supertwin Top Fuel on his Fast Cat V-twin, and former Topgas champion Job Heezen from the Netherlands won the class by beating local favorite Christian Jaeger who smoked the tyre in the semi's,
and then taking out Ronny Aasen from Norway on the blown Zodiac Harley in the finals, thanks to excelent coaching by Roel Koedam.
In the Top Fuel bike class Otto Knebl (Cz) did a new personal best of 7.01...
...and made it into semi finals where he met Ian King (UK). The crowd enjoyed a fantastic show as both Puma bikes made a long burnout side by side, followed by a six second run by both riders. Another personal best for Otto, now 6.851 seconds. Ian King beat him with an 6.4, and then beat Ricard Gustavsson from Sweden in the finals with another 6.4 doing 353.96 kmh.
Congratulations to all winners, and many thanks to Big Daddy Jerry Lackey and all staff and crew for a fantasic weekend in a relaxed atmosphere. You're on the right track!
Next race will be an 1/8 mile sprint. I'm looking forward to Mosten Race days in Denmark at the end of this month.
See you all there.
