20th Grand National Dragrace at Jerry Lackey Raceway a.k.a. the MZA in Luckau, Germany.
How to win a race without going full throttle!
4-6 july, the fourth race in the 2008 championship. so we're right in the middle of it. And what a luck we had with the weather, again! Leaving home on thirsday evening with rain, and it stayed wet all night creating a chaos on the "autobahn". But it cleared up, and a session of free training was held on friday evening. Thirteen riders showed up so a sixteen field dragrace could be held on the 1/8 mile strip of the former Russian airfield. Home boy Frank Peisker and his team were extremely motivated this time. Usually they were the last team to race, but now the were always first in line, and they used friday evening to make two passes. Frank qualfied number seven, and was taken out in the first round by Rainer Oberle.
Rainer was sent home by Harry van Schie in the quarter finals.
Harry supprised everybody and himself when he became the top qualifier with his supercharged Harley on saturday.
Brian Glaesner from Denmark was the favorite, being able to do 4 second passes on the 1/8 mile, but he could not get the horses of his Buell to the track on saturday.
So he used a pin to limit his trottle position. This worked okay for him, he managed to limit his wheelspin, and qualfied number two. His opponent in the 1/8 finals on sunday was Roman Sixta from the Czech republic on a supercharged Honda. Frequent readers know that his gearbox is the weak point, and that was no exception this time. "getriebe massaker" Roman calls it. "Mass murder of gearboxes" is the translation of this. So Brian had a free ride, and another bye run in the quarter finals. He did not take it easy, but put 4 seconds on the scoreboard, giving him lane choice in the semis, where he met Bernd Niessen.
Bernd went fast on saturday, after round two of qualifications Niessen and his team mate Cord Albers were still leading the chart, with 5.2 and 5.3 seconds. Niessen eliminated Piet Verhoef and Criss van Nimmen. Criss had some damage to a cylinder of his "Mack Attack" Harley-Davidson, but this was repaired by Barney of Harry van Schie's team.
Criss survived the first round by beating Herman Jolink on his Ducati.
Bernd Niessen redlighted in the semifinals, and Brian went to the finals.
Cord Albers won the last two races in Luckau, and also advanced to the finals this year. The "German Undertaker" eliminated Marc Vandenboer, Michael Merse and Harry van Schie. Last year a string of 5.2's was enough to win, but this year you needed to do 4 seconds, and that's what Brian Glaesner did.
Frank Heitmann was eliminated in the first round, and Brian scored almost the maximum available points, so he is now strongly in the lead of the European Supertwin Topgas Dragracing Championship. More Action? Check the data below, three more race left, Drachten in Holland is next!
