Race #2, Dragster Eurogames in Bechyne, Cz.

dragster

Over one hundred rider and drivers and their teams were present at the race, that was directed by "Big Daddy" Jerry Lackey and was held on the runway of a miltairy airbase in the Czech republic, in colaboration with motorcycle club The Predators. The event included a fair ground, music live on stage in the evening, a display of various vehicles by the Czech army and clubs, helicopter rides, demo's of jet cars, plenty foodstalls and more then enough to drink. Fun for all ages!

jrdb

The weather predictions were not very good, but it could not get much worse then last year, when the event was completely wasted by a huge amount of rain, so much that it flooded a part of the country.

It also rained on thursday and on friday morning when most teams arrived at the track. But it dried up in the afternoon, and a "test and tune" session was held, so everybody got a chance to try the quarter mile track before the qualifications began.

Herman Jolink won the first race in the serie, and was first in line and tried the left lane. He knew it would be tougher this time, as there were now nine other topgas riders wanting to get on the podium. Miia-Maria was also the entree list but on her facebook page she writes: "The team has ordered a new Bandit clutch (USA), but the clutch does not have time to come to the race for the weekend. Team wishes you all a good race !". We hope to see her in Malmö.

Here's Herman Jolink's first burnout, with Mark Vanden Boer on his methanol injected supercharged Harley (competing in the funnybike class) in the background during the test session:

Herman

A loud start of the weekend!

Rene Johan

Milan Kolacny also used the training session for a run on the supercharged Honda. Milan is a former champion of the class, and he was one of the favorites, racing at his home track.

milan

Milan launched well and raced hard, but a little later, the situation in the pits looked like this:

The engine had just died! So in goes the spare engine, and hope for the best on saturday.

Team Sideburns from the north of Germany was present with four people, and three of them were racing. Peter Niklas And Christian Bruhn on topgas bikes, and Michi was busy spinning the front wheels of his Opel.

opel

The Ducati of Niklas was not race ready yet, so he got to use Bruhn's bike again. It got him on the podium at the first race of the season, but Peter still needs to get used to handling bike, so he used the training session to practice his routine, while the owner of the bike was coaching him. Here you see him smoke up the place before he goes to the start line:

peter n

While all this was going on, "German Undertaker" Cord Albers and his assistant Gerd Caspari arrived at the track with Cord's US-import bike called Nemesis (the goddess of revenge), that is equipped with a powerfull S&S prostock engine. They set up their tent next to Frank Heitmann and took it easy for the rest of the day.

nemesis

At half past seven in the evening, both Ducati riders tried one more time, and Herman Jolink ran 8.6 seconds.

Jolink

So a good baseline for him, and he was confident for saturday.

All the way from Sweden came Mats Larsson and his team, to race on a turbocharged Harley. They had fitted a brand new part in the gearbox, and made a check-out pass,

mats

to find out there was something wrong with it:

mats

On friday evening, Frank's son Nico Heitmann got a new toy: a 600cc 4 cylinder dragbike that fits the Czech "National Dragster" class. On saturday morning he made his first pass on it.

nico

More about Nico's achievements later.

Saturday afternoon at a quarter to one, the topgassers were allowed to make their first qualification round, Jolink and Bruhn being first in line. Herman Jolink did a nice and straight 8.5, while Bruhn shut the Honda off at the burnout, and went back into the line-up.

Next pair: Olaf Menzi shut off after his burnout, and Milan Kolacny killed the spare engine in 9.0 seconds (!!!)

Third pair were the new boys, Lars Birch in the left lane and Olaf Menzi on the right.

menzi

Lars needs more tuning, and Olaf needs more practice, but both riders managed to qualify. Then Niklas did 10.4. Then Frank Heitmann failed to start the bike. Cord Albers tried his new toy for the first time, you see him on the picture below.

cord

Mechanic Caspari: "we'd rather burn the clutch then damage the gearbox or the engine". So Cord took it easy, still good for place #4.

Team Schack from Denmark was still searching to solve the shifting problems they suffered from during the last race, and they were wrenching on the gearbox on friday, instead of riding. Frederik managed to qualify, but only able to use the first and second gear, it got him on the bump spot of the list..

schack bruhn

In the left lane, Christian Bruhn did a great pass on the Turbocharged Honda, and killed his Honda engine 0.27 seconds quicker then Milan did. It got Christian a new personal best on a topgas bike, and a bit closer to his team mate Peter's of 8.5, set on the same bike, called "Blowjob One". Christian qualified number two on the list, and did not come out for anymore qualification attempts.

Then Frank Heitmann tried one more time to start the bike, but no ignition, so no spark.

(notes: Lars does not live in Saarbruecken, but some traces of Jörg Suessdorf are still in the database of the MSTO, and #559 belongs to Peter Niklas)

The second qualification session brought no changes to the list, although Niklas and Schack improved their times, all stayed in the same place in the list.

frank

Frank Heitmann had searched and found replacement coils, got his motor to run, but it stopped shortly after launch with a damaged crank shaft, and Frank put the bike is his trailer shorly after that, he was out of the race. So he concentrated on coaching Nico for the rest of the weekend.

It all looked bright and sunny when Lars made his second pass on the "Orange Bitch".

Lars

But dark clouds moved in quickly,

niklas

soon it would rain, and the third qualification round was cancelled.

Sunday mornig the sun was out, the sky was clear, and the track crew had started early with the preparations. A third round of qualifications was held.

Mats Larsson had the plan to at least try and qualify, as the third gear was still functional, and the bump spot was 17 seconds at that time.

mats

He managed to ride away when the green light came on, but he could not produce any power and aborted his run.

Olaf Menzi left the start line with his visor wide open.

Menzi

And Lars also didn't close it.

menzi

The Buell's gearbox did not like Olaf's style of riding, and it refused to function properly after this run. Still without his regular mechanic, Olaf decided to repair it at home, and did not take part in the dragrace in the afternoon.

Team Schack managed to step up to fifth place, but the problem still exists.

The above list resulted in this flowchart:

flowchart

The air base would turn into a war zone , but Peter Niklas found himself on the safe side of the ladder, in the company of three broken bikes. He was up against Milan Kolacny who had already packed and left early in the morning. Peter's next opponent would then be either Menzi or Bruhn.

Herman Jolink had no problem beating Lars Birch Andersen in the quarter finals,

qf1

but was then up against either Schack or Albers, both having potentially quicker bikes.

qfp2

Cord Albers had no chance against the defending champion, mechanic Johan had figured out the gearbox just in time, and Schack was back in business. Many cheers by teams and spectators as the scoreboard lit up.

schack

Cord Albers needed 9.6 seconds to get to the finish, and fears damage to the motor.

It was a big supprise to see Christian Bruhn in the line-up in leathers with his bike. Did the Honda engine rise from it's ashes?

Bruhn

When Christian found out that his opponent for the quarter finals was broke, he decided to try if he could advance one round, and pick up some points. All he needed to do was to get the running bike over the startline, under it's own power. He hoped the wrecked engine was still capable of doing just a few more meters. But after a few pufs of smoke after starting it, it was over and out.

Schack got lane choise in his run against Herman Jolink.

schack jolink

Herman was away first, but Frederik had already caught up with Jolink at the 60foot mark, then drifted towards the right side of the track. Schack won, 8.24 vs 8.60, with a 0.19 sec difference between them at the finish line.

Peter had two bye-runs...

niklas

...then met Frederik in the finals.

finals

Schack blasted off in his usual style, doing a 1.1 sec 60-foot.

finals

Peter had made some changes to the clutch, that did not work out well, and made the bike shut off with a flooded engine shortly after the start, while Shack did 7.97 @ 258 kmh and won the race.

So we saw the same three guys on the podium as last time, but now all on a different position.

Frederik Schack takes the lead in the championship, Just like last year, team Schack got it all come together during the second race of the season. Herman Jolink is just 40 points behind and Peter Niklas already picked up more points then in the whole 2013 season.

Other highlights:

In SuperStreetBike Horst "Nightrider" Hochheusel was in a similar position as Peter Niklas in topgas, he ended up on the safe side of the ladder, got a bye-run in the semi finals, while big boys Luca Carbonera and Peter Granica had to battle hard to get into the finals.

Peter beat Luca, and then Horst.

In the Funnybike class the Van den Belt brothers supprised everybody with their new bike. Kars van der Belt became top qualifier, he did a seven second run in the semi finals, and another one in the finals while beating Luc Raeymakers.

The smell and sound of exploding nitromethane was supplied by our former champion Roman Sixta who did three demo passes on his Fast Cat Harley.

sixta

Nico Heitmann improved every round, starting off with a 13.7, he went home with a new personal best of 10.92 sec. @ 198.12 Kmh. Well done Nico!

Now we move on to the permanent drag strips. Three in a row! The next race will be the Summer Nationals at Santa Pod raceway. Team Sideburns will be there and tries to bring both Ducati's to the track. Team Schack will use the trip also as a short family holyday. But some teams have serious problems, I hope they solve them soon.

Many thanks to the MSTO and Predators, we'll see you in Hockenheim, Jerry!
